200MP Camera Sensor
After using 108-megapixel sensors for several years and trying to perfect them, Samsung now seems ready to move to 200-megapixel cameras with the S23 Ultra. Of course, the 200MP sensor is nothing new as many phones in 2022 had it.
The Motorola Edge 30 Ultra was the first 200MP camera phone with the ISOCELL HP1 sensor. Manufactured by Samsung, it’s the first 200-megapixel image sensor for phones to go into mass production earlier this year. Since then, Samsung has also introduced another 200 MP sensor, ISOCELL HP3, in cheaper phones.
However, Samsung will unveil a brand new sensor for its 2023 flagship. The S23 Ultra will have a 200 megapixel main camera with a still unknown 1/1.3″ 0.6 µm sensor. This puts it between the HP1 and HP3, which have 1/1.22″ and 1/1.4″ sensors respectively. The new sensor takes standard 12-megapixel photos with pixel fusion. It also enables 8K recording at 30 frames per second in contrast to 24 frames per second in previous generations.
Other camera settings are similar. We look at two telephoto lenses with 3x and 10x optical zoom respectively. While certification sites list both telephoto lenses as 12MP, they are believed to be 10MP sensors and Samsung ups their resolution to 12MP.
Galaxy S22 Ultra Performance with Snapdragon 8 Gen 2
After failing to overcome criticism of the Exynos chip’s performance, Samsung may finally be done with its own chipsets. A few months ago, Qualcomm officials hinted that the upcoming Galaxy S series would be Snapdragon-centric.
The Chinese TENAA list says the same thing. Samsung apparently uses an overclocked version of the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chip in the S23 Ultra. Notably, the “Prime” Arm Cortex-X3 core is clocked at a higher frequency of 3.36 GHz compared to the usual 3.2 GHz. Similarly, the Immortalis-based Adreno 740 in the S23 Ultra is said to have a higher clock speed.
Also, the list doesn’t mention the 8/128GB storage variant, with the S23 Ultra starting at 8/256GB. However, this may only apply to China. Likewise, the most expensive model has 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage space.
Rumors and Leaks for Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra
Moving ahead, the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra will have a 6.8-inch QHD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 3088 x 1440 pixels. It will pack a 4855mAh battery, which the company will officially list as 5000mAh. The phone comes with the latest One UI 5 skin based on Android 13. We also expect Samsung to provide Android updates for at least 4 years.
